I thoroughly enjoyed the read. I learned so much about Burns and was challenged to think more about the man and his time. What came through most for me was what you described as his "understanding of modern fundamental human concerns". For me this meant that he was a wonderful commentator on the human condition as reflected in his time; had a huge faith in human dignity; an endless sympathy for his fellow man;and above all a huge belief in the importance of enjoying life in all its beauty despite its many problems ( in his case his health, poverty and erudition, talent and aspiration above his station). You really set the man so well in his personal, social, intellectual and historical context. I loved the part about "Tae a moose"- its final lines - "the best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft aglae " would be a very fitting commentary on the financial and economic crisis the world is facing today. I was also fascinated by the section on Innerpeffray library; a wonderful social comment on the intellectual aspirations of Scotland in the enlightenment.
